I've been in the trenches, using Adwords for over 3 years for my own business
- making profits in a wide range of product niches.
I make tons of sales as an affiliate, and for my own products.
I've sold $5,910,090 so far as an Amazon affilate, using Adwords

But the one thing common across everything that I sell, is that I use Adwords to get my visitors. And I'm tenacious in improving my ads and pages, to keep improving profits.
And when I see "competitor's" ads and methods I end up laughing a lot. There are a lot more people that are just guessing and stumbling, compared to the small percentage that know what they're doing. In fact when I want entertainment I can do a bit of forensic analysis on the competition's bad advertising and see all the ways they go wrong. A lot of advertisers get Perry Marshall's guide (which is a good guide), or other introductory guides, and think the "know" Adwords and can jump out the gate with it. Well there's more to Adwords then that.
It's like reading an introductory Hold'em book and then jumping into real games for significant money. Sure, there may be some other people that you can win money from. But you'll get eaten by the "sharks" you're playing against.
In Adwords the sharks are really a combination of Google itself, and the competition. Between competition and the Adwords auction system, clicks can get really expensive. And if you're dealing with higher-level keywords, a little knowledge can make the difference between great profits ... and a bloodbath!

I was making okay profits on adwords, until getting hit with the google slap a few months ago. My favorite keywords, which I was paying between 10 and 20 cents a click on, suddenly jumped to 50 cents and $1 a click!

I've played the "Mad Scientist" with Adwords, experimenting to find what works - not just taking what others say works.
In fact, I'd say this ability to keep experimenting, analyzing and "optimizing" - is what really separates me from my competition, and keeps me making healthy sales
For example I discovered and perfected my own "Google Cash" approach, before there was even a name (or ebook) for it.
